just got kristen miller’s new cd “walk” back from the plant! it’s the first cd to credit “universal noise storage” as the studio… which i think is pretty cool. looking forward to her cd release on june 12th here in newburyport at the firehouse… should be an awesome show.
work continues on a number of projects (and on finishing details in the space) and all seems to be settling in after a half year of dramatic upheaval.
will post more soon… going to be doing some music writing again after a long hiatus, with plans to release at least half a record by the years end… more details to come!

What’s up…

Well, I recently wrapped up another record for Mark Stepakoff, which is now off to the plant; Kate Redgate’s “Nothing Tragic” has been getting great reviews; Rob Laurens and I continue to work on the next record while the one that’s done waits for artwork and a suitable birthing plan. Lots of other things going on… but the most fun is probably my silly Facebook page for the studio, wherein I reveal little known factoids about many of the records I’ve worked on… check it out:

For the very, very few visitors to the blog here, I will reveal that I’ve started putting a little of my own music up on the music site “thesixtyone.” If you’ve done a record with me you might recognize a particular aesthetic in the bits of music there, though most of the things posted are from the early 90’s.

That’s all for now!

A busy year so far!
Mixed and mastered a new record for Harvey Reid, “Blues and Branches.” It’s his first solo cd in quite some time… and it’s really good. I remastered two of Harvey’s older records at the end of last year, both are now available:
“Of Wind and Water” and “Artistry of the 6 String Banjo” are both available on the Woodpecker on-line store.
Working on the next Mark Stepakoff record. Much more of an acoustic band record than the last one. Featured are Lorne Entress on drums, Paul Kochanski on upright, Duke Levine on guitar, Sean Staples on Mando and harmonies, and Joyce Andersen on fiddle and harmonies.
Susan Levine has demoed a new batch of songs for her next record.
Finally have basics for the new Kate Redgate record. “Nothing Tragic” will be released in June!
.
I recorded two live shows at Passim for Christopher Williams in January… mixes are underway in Nashvile.
Other work from Catherine D’Amato, John Wallace, Barry Michaud, and guitar wiz Ken Bonfield is coming!
.
There are three new records I worked on that just came out in the past two months… James Houlahan’s “Seven Years Now,” Liz Mitchell’s “Not the Whether of Summer” and Justin Quinn’s “Crazy Mixed up World.”
More to come!

Yesterday I moved from a Mac G4 1.42 dual to a G5 2.7 dual. Copied the hard drive across, moved the 424 card… all looked good to go.
DP needed to be re-authorized… no big deal, find the manual, good to go.
Oops, Atmosphere and Stylus need to be re-authorized. No big deal. Move the iLok over and my Waves and Oxford plugs work. All seems good.
Still on 10.4.7 though.. maybe upgrade the OS before I roll onwards.
Go to 10.4.8 and move the machine into the rack in the control room.
Suddenly, the interfaces vanish. A quick call to Motu suggests downloading the current PCI drivers. I didn’t know there were new drivers. Download new drivers. Interfaces show up. Good.
Open a session and my Spectrasonics and Oxford plugs open, and pass audio, but have no on-screen display. Just a blank window. Hmmm.
Another check in with DP where it is suggested that my video card might not be compatible with those particular plugs. Though they worked fine in the lobby before the G5 got racked.
Hair pulling ensues. Two remixes wait.
Finally, I revert to 10.4.7.
All is fine.
The entire process took me only 6 hours.
And of course the first project I opened to work on “overloaded” the processor within an hour (though Activity monitor showed no such overload). Time to reconfigure the MAS engine.
I swear the RADAR machine in the corner was snickering.

Susan Levine’s Atlas is back from the plant and happily webbing at iTunes and CDBaby. The early response has been phenomenal. The band rocks, the singing and writing is unique and we think we really made something different. It’s nice to be able to listen to a record you just finished slaving over and still love it.
Patti DeRosa’s new record is also back from the plant. Secrets and Stories was produced, mixed and mastered by me. We had a great band, Lorne Entress on drums, Paul Kochanski on electric and upright bass, John Curtis on mandolin, acoustic and electric guitars, and Billy Novick on sax and clarinet. Special guests included Pablo Pickler on piano and vocals, and Tara Greenblatt and Vance Gilbert on harmonies. I played Hammond, wurlitzer, piano, percussion, a tiny bit of electric guitar and even sang a little.
I’ve been locked up working on a rather interesting project for Harvey Reid and Joyce Andersen. More to come on that.
Lots of other things going on… more updates to come.
